Gary Williams is one of the great college basketball coaches of his generation. He was the National and Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 2002 when he led his alma mater, the University of Maryland, to its first national championship. He is one of seven basketball coaches since 1980 to guide his alma mater to the Final Four and was the first since 1974 to lead his alma mater to a national title. With 353 victories as Maryland’s head coach, Williams is the winningest coach in school history, eclipsing the mark of 348 wins by former Terp mentor Lefty Driesell. With 560 career victories in 28 seasons as a college head coach overall (including stints at American, Boston College and Ohio State), Gary is now the 9th winningest active head coach in NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball. In June of 2005, he received the University of Maryland’s highest alumni honor when he was inducted into the University of Maryland’s Alumni Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the University of Maryland Sports Hall of Fame, the Greater Washington Sports Hall of Champions, and the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Basketball Hall of Fame. A former Terrapin point guard, Gary was a three year starter under coach Bud Millikan in the late 60’s.
